The Catterthun Disaster.

THE VESSEL'S POSIIioN ASCERTAINED. |Vbbss association I Stdnet, 25th August. The salvage steamara have returned from the wreok of the Catterthun. The offioers state that they have definitely located the position of the ill-fated steamer, which lies in 30 fathems of water two and a-half miles north of the Eeal Books and two miles from the mainland. 'I he diver deaoendod a depth of 24 fathoms, and sighted the moats, but so great was the pressure of water on tbe air-pines — which were also not sufficiently long — that he had to desist. It is feared that tho great depth at which the wreok lies will not allow of the recovery of the specie. The steamers have returned, to await instructions from the underwriters. (Beoeived August 2G, 11.20 a.m.) Stdnet, This Dat. Captain Hall, who was in charge of the salvage operations, states that the rock the Catterthun struck was 2J miles sonth-east of the lighthouse, and not more than 20ft sqnare, with Slffc water on it. The rock showed sighs of the tremendous force with whioh the steamer Btruck it. The wreck lies upright abont 4\ mile* from where the vessel struck. Hod tho Cattertbnn kept afloat 20 minutes longer she would have gone down in 20 fathoms of -water, and salvaging would then have been easy. Boh Captain Hall aud the diver are of opinion that it is impossible to successfully carry on the work of salvage with present appliances.
