FIRE IN A COLLIERY.
[PUISB ASSOCIATION.] S-sdnkt, 25th August. .. A fire broke out yesterday in the seaham colliery, noar Newcastle. The engines had only fairly got to work, with a view to extinguishing it, when & big fall of coal between tho engines and the fire buried the hose and stopped operations. The fire is ittill burning. ' v ■ All the men got out safely, though one had a narrow escape, and was only rescued in an unconscious state. (Beoeired August 26, ll .2o a.m.) Stdkilt, This DAT. . The fire in the Seaham Colliery had a strong hold when discovered, 'and '*t the time of the fall of the roof between 300 and 400 yards of the main drive was on fire. The danger from the roof and from the smoke, the heat) andfoul Sir mad« itjmpbt: sible to eheciE the progress of the flames, and as the fire was burning fiercely and making rapid headway, it was seen to be hopeless to fight it. - All the miners have been withdrawn, and the pit otosed with the view of smothering the fire. Dense volumes of smoke are now issuing from the mine.
