PROPOSED GREENLAND EXPEDITION.

♦ Herr Julius yon P^yer, famous for his connection with the AustrianHungarian Tegethoff Expedition to the Arctic regions, intends to revisit East Greenland, where he won his earliest laurels, in 1873-74, by discovering Franz Josef Land. His expedition will start in June, 1896, and will be composed exclusively of Austrians and Hungarians. Herr yon Payer himself, two landscape painters, one animal painter, and a photographer will form the artistic staff, while the ship's doctor and the officers will do the scientific work. Herr yon Payer has written the following letter to a well-known geographer at Gotha: — " The object of my proposed expedition is scientific as well as artistic. The officers of the ship will make the astronomical, magnetic, meteorological, and other physical observations ; while the doctor, who must also be a naturalist, •will form botanical and zoological collections of all kinds, which will be of value to our museums, defective as they now are in the Arctic departments. The investigations of terrestrial magnetism will be greatly aided by the proximity of the magnetic Pole, magnetic phenomena being more striking there than elsewhere, and synchronising with the period of the solar spots. The investigation should contribute largely to the exact fixing of the duration of the sun's rotation. Refraction deserves equally close attention. Near the horizon its value is affected to an extraordinary degee by the atmospheric layers. Exact observations of refraction will, therefore assist us in ascertaining the laws of atmospheric currents and storms. Measurements of the radii of the lunar halos and of the situation of parhelia relative to the sun, and investigation as to whether the halos are circles or ellipses, horizontal or vertical, will throw invaluable light on the nature of clouds and vapour masses, to which all those phenomena are due. Observations respecting the propagations of sound in high Arctic latitudes will be of very great scientific value, especially as they will be quite novel. There will also be precious opportunities of studying optical phenomena, and making geographical discoveries. There is no country of the meteoroogy of which \?e know so little as North-East Greenland, where even the isothermal lines are still drawn quite arbitrarily." A man in Pennsylvania has been granted a divorce from his tenth wife. His last wife had been also his first bride, but between his first and 'last divorce from her he had married eight other women. A man in a jealous passion killed a rival in Indiana, and was sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment. The sentence having just expired, the ex-convict — now a whitehaired man — has been married to the woman on account of whom he committed the crime. During his imprisonment the sweetheart worked so hard that she was able to accumulate money enough to support both during the remainder of their lives. /■^ASE OF INCIPIENT PARALYSIS. "We have been asked to print the following: — 42, Willis- street, Wellington. _ Deab Mb. Both— Considering I owe yon a debt of gratitude, I pen these few lines ; yon are at liberty to make any use of them you think fit. I have told yon that, having consulted various eminent medical men, and taken two trips to Rotorna witfiout material benefit, I was persuaded to try massage. Unfortunately, no one here was able to treat me until your arrival, and as soon as possible I became your patient. ■ The result is so Buooessf ul that at the present moment I feel a stronger and healthier man than I have been for ten years past. Instead of feeling fatigued at the slightest exertion, I can now walk miles without experiencing any tired Feelings. We have rambled over themonnfcains abont Wellington together, and yon 3an vouch for the truth of this statement. Speaking truly, I have done more climbing luring the last few weeks than I have done rince leaving school at Nelson, many .years igo, till now, owing to the benefits derived ! Erom the massage treatment, and I can recommend it to anybody who is suffering rom any nervous or joint complaint with hogreateat confidence. Wishing yon every success, I am, yours faithfully, Son.
