SUPREME COURT.

CBIMINAL SITTINGS. (Before His Honour the Chief Justice.) Yestebdat. the hiining street cask. The evidence in the oharge of manslaughter'against Andrew Kennedy in Oon; neotion with the -above case was of a conflicting oharaoter. Bobert Gawn, one of the earlier witnesses for the Crown, swore that the lamp was thrown by Jewett, while Gee Chung, in whose house the affair ooourred, swore positively that it' was thrown by Andrew Kennedy, and no amount of crossexamination could shake his statement. Another witness, Bobert Wilson, was oortain that Kennedy conld not have thrown the lamp, because at the time it was thrown Kennedy was engaged in a scuffle with him on the floor. The oase for the Crown dosed shortly before 4 o'clock. Mr. Wilford, without oalling evidenoe for the defence, addressed the jury, pointing out that as there was only the unsupported statement of Gee Chung that it was Kennedy who threw' the lamp, against the dirootly contradictory evidenoe of two other witnesses, the accused should be given the benefit of the doubt. The jury, after an absenoe of five minutes, returned a verdiot of Not Guilty, and Kennedy was discharged. This Dat. This morning the trial of Joseph Jewett for manslaughter in oonneotion with the above affair was began, the following jury being empannelled : —Messrs. C. E. James (foreman), G. E. Prince, C. Basmussen, T. Coinpton, W. Freeman, J. J. Flyger, J. J. Smith. P. Griffiths, A. W. G. Fitehett, G. Best, J. Hicks, and O. B. Coad. Sir Bobert Stout defended the accused, who pleaded Not Guilty. The evidence was similar to that given in tho ohirgo against Andrew Kennedy, acquitted yesterday, excepting that Andrew Kennedy was called by the Crown, and stated that just before he heard the orash he saw the lamp in Jewett's hand. The oase had not oonoluded at the time of going to press.
