The Register, in commenting on the deficit Bhown in the Budget, says : — Drastic measures of eoonomy are more than likely to bq taken in connection with the railways. In spite of assurancei given to the contrary, fears are entertained in commercial circles of an increase of taxation. It appears that tbo arrangement of the lumpers' dispute is only temporary. The shipowners have now informed the men that their demand cannot be complied with. Unless it is modified it must result in a great loss to the country and to the men themselves. Bruce and Noble, who were sentenced to long terms of imprisonment in connection with the sValgett shearing riots last year, have been released^/ Tho E.M.S. Orient, which was on fire last week in Melbourne, haa arrived here. A large amount of her oargo has been seriously damaged by water. The loss is roughly estimated at £20,000. The animal report of tbe Post Office Bhows that tbe revenue increased by J35000 as compared wi h 1893, but fell short of the expenditure by .£114,000. Tbe balance of expenses over revenue to tbe end of 1891 was .£124,000. The deposits in tho Savings Bank totalled .£3,634,000, an increase of £400,000.
