Up to the present 177 orders have been ißSued by Mr. A. 6. Johnson, the Seoretary of the Benevolent Institution, to applicants for employment on the works. Of these there are 112 married men and 65 single. The ages of the applicants range from 17 to 71, and the list comprises men of nearly all nationalities. As the number taken on practically exhausts the list of unemployed now in the oity, and no more can be put on the present work, it is useless for any to apply nnleas in oases of extreme hardship. Especially men in the country are warned not to oome into town, as no application Oan be considered unless accompanied by autuentio proof that the applicant has been resident in Wellington for the last three months. A gang of 24 men was started to-day on the preliminary work in connection with the formation of the reoreation ground in Mount-street. Thoy are clearing the ground and cutting the base line. A large number of those waiting will be taken on to-morrow. The City Council will on Thursday evening consider a recommendation of the Public Works Committee that Connoillors Harris, Anderaon, and Penty be appointed to represent the Connoil on the Unemployed Relief Committee. The Benevolent Trustees deoided this afternoon to aocept the money subscribed for the relief of the unemployed, and to entrust the expenditure of the fund, together with the Government subsidy, to a Committee on whioh the Institution is represented by the Bey. H. Van Staveren and Messrs. S Lancaster and G. H. Baylia. The following further contributions to the fond have been received : — Amount previously acknowledged, £685 0s Id. One who Objects to Publish his Name, £5; A Sympathiser, £5 ; Working Men's Clnb, £2 2s ; W. T. Glasgow, £1 Is ; G. L. Jenness, £2; Edward Anderson, £3 3s ; Eev.Mr. Ogg. £1 U; employes J. Staples Co., Limited, £S 4s ; employes J. * Co., JBI 163 6d ; King and Muir's employed, £1% total to date, 4710 7s 7d.
