In the earlier portion <W . •, second spell Melrose had the beßt ot tbo play, but at the latter end of tho game the Ponekeß asserted themeelveß, and Galloway, after a dashing run, scored near the oorner flag, M'Anally being unable to convert the try. The Ponekes showed that they are able to play well when the ground is in good condition. The forwards had far the best of their opponents, and had Sweeney and Morton been able to take the ball better, the sooring would have been muoh larger. Pndney, Galloway, and Davidson were the pick of the baoks. Kelly was not playing on Saturday. Lee and M'Kay did well on the wing. White, Young, Poland, and M'Anally were the pick of the paok forward. The Melroeo forwards did not show any of the dash displayed by them in their recent engagements. Campbell, Calnan, Laughton, and Johnson worked hard throughout the game, Campbell going very close to placing a goal from a mark on one oooasion. J. Bourke and Warwick were the piok of the backs. E. Bourke bad to retire. White allowed the -Melrose captain to take on a player, but no member of the Melrose Club was available. The. game was played in capital spirit. Mr. .'M'Kenzie acted as referee, Messrs. Slater and lipscombe acting as touohline judges. WELLINGTON V. ATHLETIC. This match, which took place at Now town Park, was an exhibition of football with few redeeming features. Both teams were minus the services of Eoveral players, and substitutes were taken on. In the first Bpell Cox drew first blood for Wellington, after a pretty passing rush, and Hoache by a fine kick registered the major points. Towards the termination of the spell W. Holes touohed down for the Athleticß, but the attempt to increase the score was unsuccessful. Shortly after the start of the second spell D. Burnett Bcored a try for Wellington. The Athletio3 had all the beßt of the remainder of the play, Swindley and Glasgow securing tries. The latter* s try was a very doubtful one. The place -kicking throughout was wretched. The Athletics proved viotors by nine points to eight. Halcß (2) and Craw furd were the beßt of the backs, while Kelly, who played on the wing in the first spell and five-eighth in the second half, was very conspicuons throughout. M'Lean and Gray did good work in the forward division. All the Wellington backs played very well, Masters, Roacbe, and Home in particular showing up. Longton.Koe, Murray, Hallamore, and D. Barnett were the best of the forwards. Mr. S. Nioholls was reforee, and Meßsrs. P. lirodorick and M. F. Marks touoh-liuo umpires. JTJNIOB CTJP. The Athletic-Wellii gton College heat was played on No. 2 gronnd, Petono, and after a stubborn game victory rested with the former, who ore now the junior champion team this season. The play was fairly even dnring the first spell, the game being almost confined to the forwards. Tripe mulled the ball on several occasions, and the College passing was not so judicious aa usual. During the second spell M'Kenzie kioked the ball against an Athletic forward, the ball going into touch near the corner flag. From the throw-in Rbepheard grounded the ball over the College line, but Howard failed to increase the score The winners are a heavy lot, but the Collegians played well againßt their big opponents.
