Several letters to the Editor are held over. Fifty-three cases of Martini-Henry rifles came out by the Tainni, from London, this morning, consigned to the Defence Department. The following tendera were reoeived by the Wellington Harbour Board for centraot No. 82, for the aupply of 20 hydraulic jiggers : — Messrs. Scott Bros. (Chriatohurch), £696 (accepted) ; S. Luke 4 Co., Limited, £775 ; E. Seagar, £832 16a ; John Anderson. £914; A. and T. Bnrt, £941; W. Cable & Co., £1150. Tho hearing of tbe case Olaen, Henriokßon, and Johnston v. D. H. Johnston, a claim of £100 each for illegal imprisonment, whioh had been removed out of the Supreme Court for Mr. Martin, S.M., to arbitrate on, was finished to-day. His Worship reserved his award. Messrs. Bunny and Skerrett appeared for the defendant and Mr. Jellicoo> for the three plaintiffs. Measrs. Brown, Gamble, and Patterson, who were offioers of the nteamer Maori when she was running under charter to the Union S.S. Company, loft her in London, and were ordered on to New Zealand. They came out by the Tainui, which arrived in port this morning. Captain Todd, Colonial Superintendent of tho Tyser Company in New Zealand, waa also a passenger, having been four months absent from the colony. Captain Riohardson, who was in oharge of the Maori, left London for Calcutta to take command of the oompany'B newly-chartered steamer Mount Sirion, whioh was to have left Calcutta for New Zealand, via Singapore and Townsville, on Saturday. An excellent programme is published for the Athlotio Carnival for the benefit of Mr. T. B. Bax, to be held at the Skating Sink on Thursday. All tha performers are men of considerable note. There will be wrestling (different styles) by S. Matthews, W. Hudson, W. Kirkwood, Plaacke, M'Carthy, and Fitzgibbon, all notable exponents ; boxing by Messrs. Starlight, Floyd, isichardson, Rosenberg, and Louieeon ; olub-swinging by Mr. T. Bax and the Doyle Brothers; heavy clubs and dnmbbella. Messrs. Cansdell and Joneß. Tha Rizzio Brothers will give an aorobatio exposition ; there will be foil and singlestick performances by Captain Paterson and Mr. Milson; old and new bayonet exercises by the Wellington Guards. To wind up with, a j tug-of-war will take place, five men a-side, between the different amateur clubs. It ia hoped that a substantial benefit to Bax will result. Mr. Tallis Trimnell'a next organ recital, entitled "An Evening with Frenoh and Belgian Composers," is announced to be given on Thursday, Bth prox. An excellent programme has been prepared, to whioh J&r. John Frouse will contribute a couple, of vocal numbers. Notwithstanding all the oountor, attractions, the Sale at Mr. C. Smith's, the Cash Draper, Cuba-street, is having a thorough good run. The customers are just as keen after the Bargains to-c"iay as they were the first day the Sale started. To-morrow some most extraordinary bargaina in blankets, umbrellas, mantle?., millinery, and dresa materials will be offered ; also, two bales of sheeting slightly damaged, at 6d per yard.
