Of the seven members of the Northern Territory Commission, three dissented from the leoommendation to establish a State experimental farm for tho growth of tropical products, with » view to the introduction of coloured labour, on the grounds that it is imporative that Australia should bo kept free of servile racea, and the raoial antagonism and mixed blood necessarily consequent on tb.B introduction of coloured poople ; that nuoh labour is really not oheapor, and that where it has been tried in Queensland the mortality amongst coloured peoplo has been enormous and has led to decimation of the Islaudora. Two other Commissioners dissented on the ground of expense, as the Chinese had already demonstrated that the territory was suited to tropioal cultivation.
