The Begistrar-General's return of vital statistics for the month of April giveß the mimbor of births and deaths and proportion of deaths to 1000 of population as f ollowb for the several boroughs i —

The figures for the four principal cities I wers : — I

The total births in the four cities and suburban boroughs amounted to 336, against 312 in March, a deorease of 6. The deathß in April were 165, a decrease of 27 on the number in March. Of the total deaths, males contributed 89 ; females, 76. Fifty-five of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being one-third of the whole number ; 45 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 30 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards : six men of 68, 69, 70, 71, 73, and 76, andeight women of 65, 66,68,69,70,80,84, and 85, died at Anokland ; two men of 81 and 82, and one woman of 71 at Wellington ; two men of 77 and 83, and two women of 66 and 68, at Christohurch ; eight men of 65, 66, 70, 76! (two), 78, Bi, 85, and one woman of 77, at Dunedin. From specific febrile and zymotic diseases the fall in the number of deaths at the four bentrea, with their suburbs, was noticed last month. The deaths fell again in April, the number was 22, against 29 in March. The proportion per cent, of deaths from zymotio diseases to the total deaths from all causes was 24 66 in February, 1511 in March, and 13 34 in April. Of 22 deaths last month, 8 only were from diarrhoea! diseases, against 23 in March. Influenza caused 2 deaths — 1 at Auckland and 1 at Dunedin. Ihere was also 1 death from whooping - congh at each of these cities Diphtheria waß fatal in 1 case at Auokland. The mortality from typhoid fever increased from 1 death in March to 6 in April, of which 5 occurred at Wellington i The remaining deaths in April were 2 from oongenital syphilis (children) and 1 from septictomia. The deaths from parasitic dieeaseß numbered 2, 1 front hydatids in the pleura. The deaths front constitutional diseases show a deorease from 47 in Maroh to 34 in April. Phthisis caused 13 deaths, and cancer 9. From looal diseases the mortality comprises 74 deaths, viz., from diseases of nerrons system, 11 (apoplexy 6) ; of circulatory syatem, 14 (heart-disease, ie, 12) ; of respiratory system 18 (bronchitis and pneumonia 15) ; of digestive Bystem 20 ; of urinary system, 6 (Brigbt'a diseaao 2) ; of reproductive system, 3 ; of locomotive organs, 1; and of integuments, 1. Of violent deaths, there were 8 deaths by. acoident, 1 wilful murder, and 3 suioides. A Customß officer was killed by falling down the companion stairß of a steamer, 3 persons were drowned by the capsizing of a boat, 2 persons were found drowned, a child was accidentally suffocated, and another died from exhaustion after an operation. A woman, of 25 years, was murdered, and another, 84 years old, cnt her throat while temporarily inisane. There were 2 suicides by poisonin one oase a girl of 19 killed herself by eating matches, and in the other, the nature of the poieon was not stated.
