Jabez Balfour was smuggled ashoro at Southampton on a Customs launch, this step buing taken to ova'io the small army of pressmen who were waiting to interview the prisoner. On arrival in London he was conveyed to the Bow-Bireet Polioe Station, the efforts to evade tho crowd at Watorloo Railway Station being successful. Balfour was subsequently brought before the Court, and remanded.

Banffy, the Hungarian Premier, explains that he forwarded to Vienna the draft of the protest to the Italian Government against the action of tbe Papal Nuncio in Vienna in fostering the clerioal agitation, as he supposed Count Kalnoky wonld keep the promise privately made, and forward it to the Vatioan. Count Kalnoky, objecting to the tone of the protest, and being desirons of supporting the priests, retained it. The Vienna press reproaches tho Vatican for causing perpetual trouble.

The report of the Opium Commission with regard to tho traffic in India is decidedly adverse to interference with the importation of the drng, and declares that the agitation in England is due to ovordraivn pictures as to its effect.
