CHBIBTCHUECH, 31st August. At a public meeting to-night, attended by about 300 people, a resolution was carried expressing the opinion that the tendency of the new Licensing Bill was to conserve the interests of the liquor traffic , disapproving the proposal to take the licensing poll on the day of the general election; expressing the opinion that the questions of local and colonial Prohibition should be taken as distinct issues; affirming clause (4 to be a cunning device for defeating the popular will; and demanding that the issue of " license or no license?'' should be decided by a majority of the electors who vote. Auckland. 31st Anguat. In the Supreme Court to-day, argument was continued in the Banco case of Ehrenfried and another v. Kenny and others. This was a motion for a writ of mandamtu to compel the Thames Licensing Committee to grant a license to the Empire Hotel. Mr. F. E. Baume appeared in support of the motion. Mr. Theo. Cooper represented the Committee. The Committee had refused the license of the hotel, and it was contended the Committee was not justified in refusing a license when it waa offered that the matteri complained of would be remedied, and this, as a matter of fact, had since been done. After a lengthy legal argument, his Honour intimated that he thought the point was really a very small one, and he would take time to consider it. The real point was whether the notice waa within the terms of the Act, and he would see what authorities had to say on the subject.
