EDUCATION BOARD.

* The monthly meeting of tho Board was held to-day. Present— Messrs. J. E. Blair (Chairman), W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., Rev. J. Patereon, W. W. M'Cardle, J. Young, F. Bradey, W. A. Fitzherbert, F. H. Fraaer, and Dr. Newman, M.H.R. The pay-sheet, amounting to .£3509 5a 7d, was passed. Mr. Young moved, according to notice, that the services of Miss Keese Bhould bo retained at the Pahiatna Sohool. She had been very popular with the children, and he thought the Board might allow her six or eight months in which to obtain the neoessary certificates- The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. It was resolved that the Te Aro Committee should control the new school at Mitchelltown, now ready for opening, nntil next January, the sohool to be classed as an infant Bchool up to tho 2nd Standard Mr. Young brought up a motion for the re-appointment of the Pupil Teachers' Nomination Committee. Such a Committee was reqnirod, and ho ventured to say that tbe teacherß appointed under the old committee generally gave greater satisfaction. It also prevented all possibility of favouritism, and relieved country teaohera of much responsibility. The Chairman of the Board said tho alternative was that the Board should retain the power of making such appointments. Mr. Fitzherbert seconded the motion. Mr. M'Cardle ¦aid he would support; the proposal if there were several Committees, some to meet in town, and the others in different parts of the country distriotß, the Committees to be composed of members of the Boards, head teaohera, and members of the Sohool Committeee. The Rev. Mr. Pateraon said tho function of the old Committee was to seleot competent teaohers, but it wont out of its provinoe and made appointments. The Chairman said that Mr. McCardle's proposal waß impracticable, beoause the Committees could not be got together. Mr. Young said he was prepared to accept Mr. MoCardle's suggestion, whioh he thought an excellent one. The motion for the re- constitution of the Committee waa carried, and a committee consisting of the Chairman, Dr. Newman, and Messrs. Fraaor, Bradey, and the mover, was Bet up to formulate regulations. It was resolved to expend a sum not exceeding JBIS in 'repairing the teaohet's residence at Dreyerton, the Chairman being empowered to see that the Board has a legal light to oconpy the property for a period not exoeeding five years. The appointments of Mr Dempsey to the Hastwell school, and of Miss Levy to the Mangaono school, were confirmed. Miss Franklin, Mauriceville school, was granted three months' leave of absenoo withont salary, and Mr. J. Mead and Miss E. Robinson eaoh a month's leave. The resignations of Mias Zoe Dryden (Karori) and Mr. J. E. Stewart (Mangamahoe) were accepted. It was stated that Mr. J. P. Dab in, Masterton, had accepted an appointment at Napier, and it was resolved to advertise tho vacancy. Mrs. Larson and Miss Gillies were ap. pointed sewing teachers at the Mangamaboe and Te Horo Schools respectively, and it was resolved to admit Miss Barnard as a probationer at Kaiwaiwai for three months. Ihe appointment of Mr. D. Wardlaw as teacher at the Droyerton Sohool was approved. A grant of .£5 was made for separate offices at Ngaturi, and plans were ordered to be prepared for additions at Mangatainoka. A grant was also mode for repairs to tho fencing at Matarawa, and the carpenter was ordered to do some necessary work at Petone. Tho Chairman was empowered to accept the lowest- tender for the West Taratahi Sohool. The Secretary was requested to call for fresh applications for an assistant teacher at Pahiatua As regards some work required to bo done at the Thorndon and Terrace Schools, it was stated that the matter would be considered as soon oa it was known what amount of building grant would be available.
