A singular prosecution has been instituted by the police against a married woman resident at Ballarat Bast. It in alleged that the woman, who is childless, some time ago took over an infant, the offspring of a young girl residing in the district. The foster-mother led nor husband to believe the child was her own. and it ib stated Bhe spent soveral days in the seclusion of her bed ohamber. The infant died, however, and later on the woman, through the agency of an advertisement, became possessed {of a second ohild, belonging 1 to a single woman residing in Ballarat. In thiß instance also it is alleged the woman misled her husband by telling him the ohild was her own. Singular to say the man believed the story. She registered the child as her own, and the polico aro proceeding against hor on summons for a breach of the Infants' Protection Act. The authorities, however, feel that the accused acted in ignorance
