PARLIAMENTARY NOTES. NATIVE LEGISLATION.

A meeting of native chiefs now in Wellington was held this morning to consider the native legislation now before Parliament. Te Hue Hue Tukino presided, and the meeting was addressed by Major Kemp and Kipa Whatanui. No definite resolutions were come to, but a general opinion soomed to exist that Parliament, in legislating on native affairs, had never givon sufficient consideration to the expressed wishes of the natives themselves. With reference to tho Native Kights Bill introduced by Mr. Hone Heke, embodying the requirements of the Maori Parliament, it was felt by the natives that the House should give it fair consideration, and expross an opinion upon its provisions. With regard to Mr. Wi Pere's Native Land Administration Bill, it was pointed out that it was the first complete and distinct scheme for dealing with native lands which had emanated from the natives themselves. Parliament had for many years been attempting to legislate on the subject, with very unsatisfactory results, and consideration should now therefore be accorded to the scheme formnlated in Mr. Wi Pore's Bill, and expressing tho wishes of the natives themselves. Further meetings are to be hold. JOTTINGS. A rumour current in the lobbies to the effect that the Government intends to propose State fire insurance, is understood to be without foundation.
