The Spray got away first, but was ! overtaken before the Point Jerningham bnoy waa reaobed. In beating np the first time the lona held a muoh better wind than the Spr"iy, and rounded tho Kaiwarra buoy nearly half an hour ahead of her. The Spray shortly afterward? gave up. The lona, which for some time was becalmed a short diatanoe from the finishing line, crossed just as the southerly gale came up. PETONE NAVALS. Tho half-yearly sailing race betweon tho port and starboard waiohes of the Potono Navalrt for the honour of flying the company's banner for the next nix moxths. and for Lieut. Field's telescope (which has to be won twice), took place on Saturday afternoon The course was from the end of the Goir Company's wharf, round Somes' Island, tben round a buoy at Koro Koro, and back to tbe end of the wharf- a distanoe of between five and six miles. A very evon start was made by l>ieut. Feild, there beings fresh westerly breeze. In the run to the island the boats kept close together, but th-3 starboard cutter, having the windward aud inside running, rounded the island first and kept ahead to the buoy, rounding it abont 30 seconds in advance of the second cutter. The wind falling, the race resolved itself into a drifting match and so close were the boats that one or two bumps occurred. When off the Woollen A ills th<? • southerly squall made things very lively for a short time, and the boats had a very exciting run home, wbioh resulted in tbe starboard watoh winning by 15 seconds. The winning bout -waa sailed by P.O. J. Woods, and the port cutter by P.O. Sinclair. The watches are now even in the number of wins for both banner and telescope.
