MR. MACDUFF BOYD'S CONCERT.

There was a good attendance at Mr. Mac Duff Boyd's concert at Thomas' Hall last evening. The programme was opened with a trio for two violins and a viola (Mazas), tastefully and delicately played by Miss Dngdale, Messrs. Mao Duff Boyd and K. H. Audorson. It was au excellent number, but a Mozart trio for piano, violin, and viola (Miss M. Myers, Miss Dugdale, and Mr. Mac Duff Boyd), which opened the second part, was not so successful, lacking smoothness. Mrs. Mao Duff Boyd, the possessor of a very sweet voice, which sbp uses expressively, (>ang with excellent effect ''Jessie, the Flower o' Dumblane." The concert-giver played tastefully, artistically, and smoothly, a tender " Nocturne?' bracketed with a Chopin Mazurka, iv the firßt part, and in the second the well-known Krnst "Elegie," though this was not up to tho standard of his bracketed solos. He also contributed largely to the success of the Gounod Serenade by a sympathetic violin obbligato. Misses May Sullivan and Dri^cplt (pupils of Miss M'Clean) repeated their success at a recent concert with Gatty's version of " Maying," securing the first recall of the evening. Their fresh, Bweet, powerful, and well-managed voices blended admirably. Miss Driseoll was also recalled for her fine interpretation of "The Lady of the Lea," and Miss bullivan for her repetition of the Gounod Serenade sung at Miss M'Clean's conoert Miss M. Myers played Chopin's bountiful Polonaise m A somewhat labouredly, and as (like many other local pianists) the performer had not studied the composition sufficiently to be independent of the score, "it was as a reading is to a rocitation, the composer suffering proportionately. Mr. W. A. Day was down for^ the "' Mia Vita" of Maschoroni, and " S'io vendicato " of Meyerbeer. Both songs gave evidence of careful study and were sung with good expression, but the splendid baritone voioe which Mr. Day possesses was not heard at its best. The first song was too high for the singer, and in both the voice was strained and harsh towards the finish — a result, it was understood, of recent cold. An enjoyable concert conducted with a quartet. " Afton Water," sung by Mrs. Bojd, Miss Gibbes, Messrs. J. A. .Nairn and F. V. Waters, in whioh the harmonies were imperfect Miss M. Myers and Miss Dugdale played excellent accompaniments.
