PROTEST AGAINST LIGHT PENALTIES. TUy Tblegbafh. ! f united pbbss association. i Auckland, 11th 4pril. At a meeting of the Auckland AcolimatiRation Society, Captain Whitney commented upon some light penalties inflicted by Magistrates for breaches of the Animals Protection Aot. Ho particularly alluded to a case at Whangaroa, where a person convicted of shooting pheasants and qnail out of season, was fined only Is Moßt of the members coincided with Captain Whitney's views, and it was agreed to draw the attention of the Minister of Justice to the gravo mistake of inflicting morely nominal fines for killing game during the close season. It was also decided that the other acclimatisation societies throughout the colony be asked to co-operate in induoing Government to amend the A ct by providing a minimum fine of £2 2s.
