The lower parts of the town were submerged, and the inhabitants fled to the higher ground. A man named Thomson was drowned while engaged in rcrcue work. Large quantities of bat. anas which were lyiug ready for shipment were washed away. At Townsvillo tho western on-t of the breakwater was demolished by <hn aotion of heavy seas, and tbo eastern end was also considerably damaged.
