SCARLET FEVER.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir — There aro vory strict law 3in force in this cilcmy for preventing disease among&t catdo niid scab ainoDgst sheep, and heavy fines are inflicted should tho flocks and herds go wrong. There is also a law relating to dog*, who are sent into quarantine for six months on arrival in the colony, lest they give disease to colonial dogs. There is an epidemic of measles now in Wellington, and several people have succumbed to it, and this morning I bear scarlet fever has been raging in Sydney, yet no steps were taken to prevent it reaching our shores, and this day I was informed by a medical man that it would soon be here, as it was in Dnnedin. I wish to know if the authorities will take stops to prevent it reaching here, or "~ other districts. It is somewhat true that human life, not being a marketable commodity, is scarcely so valuable as sheep, cat, or dog. Still, something might £ be done to prevent scarlet fever spreading over the country and slaughtering our littlo ones. Could not the Bteamers be inspected "■ before leaving infected ports? Trusting yon will use your valuable pen in behalf of our youngsters, I am, <tc, Paterpamiliab. Brougham-street, 2Gth July, 1893.
