THE VOLUNTEERS.
The City Rifles will hold a competition for class trophies and ammunition prizos on Monday morning, firing to commence at 5 a.m. Ammunition at tho Drillshod this ovoning from 7 to 7.30 p.m. There was a capital muster at tho inspection parado of the Guards last oyening, 54 of all ranks being presont. Captain Paterson was in command, and LioutcnantPorrittwas also in t attendance. Major Ncwall was the inspecting oflicor, and fouud tho arms and accoutrements in capital condition. The members woro warned to attend volley firing on Tuesday morning.
Gildroth, tho slaughterman, who met with an accident at Ngahanranga, had his log amputated in tho Hospital to-day. A married woman named Rubina Laura Ritchie, living in Roxburgh-street, died at 2 a.m. to-day. Dr. Pollen, who was called in after death, rofnses to give a certificate, as ho had not attended the deceased while alive. An inquest will probably be hold tomorrow morning. Tho Star of Wellington Lodgo, 1.0. G.T., held its weekly session lost evening at No. 11 room, Exchango Buildings, under the presidency of Bro. M'Cauley, C.T. After the routine business had been transacted, a spelling bee was inaugurated, whon a large number of mombers took part, and Bro. Smith, of the Pioneer Lodgo, was tho successful competitor. The question-box was them oponed, when questions woro road from slips of paper, and answers were givon which woro interesting and instructive. Bro. Hall gave an interesting account of the establishment of tho Order at Levin. One of those rare bargains that aro so fow and far betweon has boon scoured in Dunedin by C. Smith, the cash draper and olothior, Cuba-street, and has just been opened up, consisting of 10,000 yards of all-wool dress materials, in all the new shades so much in vogue. Those lovely goods will bo sold at tho absurd price of 10s 6d the dross, to effect a speedy clearance. — Advt.
