RIDICULING AN ACTRESS.
The prima-donna of a well-known burlesque opera company arrived in New York a few daya ago, and went to a fashionable hotel in Upper Broadway. She had two trunks, one being overpoweringly large and tho other exceptionally email. The actress' presence created a sensation among the men in the hotel, and every time she appeared in the corridors or parlours she was the cynosure of admiring eyes. She was proud and haughty in her beauty, and none of the yearning men that watched her movements was able to attract from her so much as a careless glance of recoguition. Finally a revulsion of feeling toward the handsome performer took possession of her slaves, and disparaging romarks concerning her and and her conduct were hoard about tho house. By-and-by it was learned that tho lady was about to take her departure, and it was resolved by a number of men in the hotel that a largo company should be present when she entered her carriage. The timo came, and, when tho porters brought the very large and very small trunk down to the sidewalk, about 20 curious and idle gentlemen were ranged about the entrance to watch the exit of the queen of burlesque. At last she came, accompanied by her maid, and when she saw the crowd that had gathered to bid her good-bye, 6he scornfully turned up her pretty nose, and sailed toward the carriage door. On her wa}' her eyo fell on her two trunks, and sho stopped short, a flush of anger springing to her cheoks. On tho very small trunk was a pasted label coyering all at oue cud of it, upon which, in large letters,.. printed the word " Costumes " uu<-«e very large trunk was auother label, bearing tho inscription " Press Notices." The actress fairly quivered with rage, as she realised that she had been made tho subject of ridicule, and, as she ordered the porters (to scrape
the offensive labels from her trunks, she cast a look of almost murderous contempt upon the men who were enjoying her discomfiture. — Boston Herald.
