CITY COUNCIL.

♦ The fortnightly mooting of tho City Council was held last evening. There wore present— The Mayor (Mr. A. W. Brown) and Councillors Smith, Petheriok, Clere, Fraeer, Harris, Mooller, Worth, Willeston, Parsons, »nd Anderson. Leave of absenoe from the meeting was grantod to Councillor Turnbull. Mr. Good, Mayor of Bangiora, and Mr. Eudd, a member of the Sydenham Borough Council, were introduced to the Council as visitors. A letter was read from Mr. James Lookie. undertaking that, as thero is not sufficient money Iprovided to carry out the formation of Maofarlano-streot, in aooordance with the City Engineer's planß, he and Mr. Watson will supplement the amount in hand by £25 in order to enable the road to be properly completed. The report of the Public Works Committee, as already published, was disoussed. In reference to clause 1, relating to the application of the Star Boating Club for a reduotion of its water account for October and November last— when the amount charged, aooording to meter, ran up from the normal average of about £1 per month to £10 for the two months— it was resolved on the motion of Councillor Mooller, that the ohargo be roduoed one half. Clause 9— That tho Government be asked to hand over the fiotanio Gardens, and also the ' Cemetery Reserves, so soon as the latter has been closed for burials. Councillors Ander■on and Worth were afraid that the wording of tba clauso would prevent the unused part of the Cemetery Reserve from being handed over until after the expiry of the time within which blood relations of persons already buried may be interred -i.e., some 60 or 70 years henoe. After some disonssion the two last words were struck out, and the phrase, " in accordance with tho Cemeteries' Act," was substituted on Councillor Worth's motion. Sabjeab to these amendments, the report was adopted. Aooounts to the amount of £1043 8s 4d were passed for pajmont. Councillor Anderson moved for a return showing the expenditure upon the formation and maintenance of the oity rooreation grounds, &o. The mover's avowed objeot was to show that money had been lavished upon the southern end of the oity to the negleot of Thorndon. Councillor Moeller inserted that the motion had been brought

down for the pdrpOße of nrousing ill-feeling, nnd hinted that confiiderablo oxpnndituro upon drainage in tho noighbourhond of Unvornmont. Bui'dingH oonld bo pointed out a« a set-off. The Mayor and Councillor Moollor pointed out that tho information could have been obtained by making a simple ror.ncst to the Town Clerk, without going to tl.e formality of v. motion. The motion wa3 nr-gatived on tba voices, but the Mayor informed Councillor Anderson that he could still got the information by simply asking for it.
