• ■ / .-- |Bt Telegraph.] (Our Own Correspondent.) Chbistchttech, This Dat. The Christchurch Press opposes the action of the Lyttelton people to retain Gaoler O'Brien there, and virtually states that it is not trne that Roberts was sent to Bipa Island against O'Brien's advice. At the meeting on Saturday, Mr. Joyce, member for Lyttelton, denied that he had -taken an active part in the removal of O'Brien. He thought the steps taken by the meeting were misguided; hut, aftor the resolution in favonr of O'Brien was carried, he said he would do what he could to retain O'Brien in his present position.
