The following 1 ar« the proposals submitted to, Tawhiao by Mr. Mitchelson on behalf of the Government, at the native meeting at What^whatihoei — "(1) Tha Government will provide land for Tawhiao and his peopU in such areas as may be approved by Parliament, and in suoh placet at may be suitable and where land is available. The wishes of Tawhiao and his people will bo considered in fixing the localities. (2) Such of the confiscated lands at Mongere, formerly owned by Potatau, as remain undisposed of, to be retained to Tawhiao and his people, and a residence erected there for Tawhiao if he desires. (3) The Government will make suoh provision for Tawhiao at mar be arranged between the Government and himself, so as to enable him to lire in comfort and work oordiallr with tho Govern-

ment for tho good of the Maori people. (4) To ensure the land to Tawhiao and his people, it shall bo made inalionable by sale or lease. The only conditions which I, on behalf of the Government, consider neoessary to attach to these proposals are— (a) That Tawhiao and his people should generally take the oath of allegiance to her Majesty the Queen, (b) That Tawhiao rod Mb people shall occupy tho land provided for them."
