The detectives apparently had a diffionlt task set them when they first commenced their search for Henry Herbert Hunt, who was to-day committed for trial on three separate charges of forgery. No two descriptions of the man given the detectives (allied, and it since turns out that the only :i xnrate one was that obtained from Mr. Geo. Bayh's, in whoso employ Hunt had been. Detective Chr.yatnl, knowing this latter, and having discovered that a man answering somewhat Hnnt'p appearance, had purchased a blank cheque-book from the Bank in Mr. Uayliss' namp, went to that gentleman and asked to koq specimens ot the handwriting of his employd-i. Hunt's was among them, and was recognised by thu detective, who thus obtained a full description of the man ho "wanted." Hunt came very near being 1 captiirpd in one of the hotels in the To Aro ward on Thursday evening by the fatne detective, who, having a strong suspicion that the man was on the premises, questioned the barmaid regarding him. This fai" damsel, probably piomptod by curiosity, wiote the name " Hunt " on a scrnp of paper and gave it to an individual answering the des-cription given by the detective, ar.d who was not visible to th.j " eagle eye " of the representative of the law. Tho follow denied that his name was Hunt, but gave that of "Shannon." ■ 'He, however, took the hint, and cleared out before the detective could got a sight of him. However, as since related, his capture boon followed.
