MR. FISHER'S LAND TAX.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir— Mr. Georgo Fishor, in my hearing at tho Opera Houso, advocated a land tax which would " roach " certain largo landod os tat os in Cantorbury, which ho onumoratod I fail to 800 how they can bo " rcaohod" in any other way than by a progressive tax, as without being progressive a Jand tax wonld have no moro effoofc in reaching those hugo estates than a proporty tax has. Mr. Fisher HOomß to have retrojjadod a quartpr of a century in his views on this quostion. He is now, by his own showing, far bouind tho Tory party in England, who havo alroady adopted the ideas of what Mr. Fisher calls tho " demagogue class of politicians," by passing moasures for confiscating raok rents and affecting other much needed land reforms, calculated to burst up the big estates, much moro effeotuolly than a progressive tax would do in this colony. I am, &0., Alexander Stbwart. Evening Post Chambers, Wollington.
