The Colonial Treasurer and County Grants,
We are requested to state with regard to paragraphs which have appeared contesting figures whioh the Colonial Treasurer lately stated to the deputation concerning looal government, that he did not give those figures aa the results of the Eoada and Bridges Construction Act alone. Over and over again he stated that they included other expenditure within the County. He read and showed to the deputation the heading of the return from which he quoted, whioh was as follows : — " The expenditure above desoribed as subsidies to Counties includes all grants under Roads and Bridges Construction Aots, and also all expenditure under special votes of Parliament for road works in the various Counties, oomprißing votes for ordinary publio works roads and also roadato open up lands before sale and roads on goldfields."
