In tho House this afternoon, Mr. Joseph Ivesa, the new member for Wakanui, was introduced by Messrs. Holmes and Walker, and took the oath and his seat. Sir George Grey presented a petition from 2197 electors and lona fide settlers throughout the colony praying that a land tax may be imposed an soon as possible. Mr. Fisher presented a petition from Mesars. Tayton and Krakine, of Wellington, praying that compensation be made to them for the loss of their contract, or that they be permitted to continue that contract, whioh they allege was taken from them without reasonable causo. Mr. Fisher gave notice of a Bill to amend tho Police Offencea Act, 1884. Mr. Pyke gavo notice to jnovo that the system of nominated immigration be resnmed withont delay, lieply in fj to Mr. Stewart as to whether the Government intend to appoint stenographers in the Supremo and Distriot Courts, the Minister of Justioe aaid it waa proposed to ask the Houao for a sufficient sum for the purpose. Mr. Larnaoh aaked Mr. Fisher to renew his question another day re Wellington Harbour Board endowments, when au answer would be given. Replying to Mr. Holmes aa to whether the Government will exempt the property of benefit societies from taxation nndor the Property Assessment Aot, the Premier said the Government did not propose to interfere with the existing law. In answer to Mr. Fitzherbert, Mr. Tola said the Government would consider the advisableness of inoluding "Bough on Eats " under the first part of the first schedule of "The Poieona Act, 1871."
