There were twelve members present, Mr. W. J. Steward in the chair. In regard to the clause relating to borrowing powers, thero was a good deal of disoussion, and it was deoided that no loan should be sanotioned unless three-fifths of tho burgesses poll ed in favour thereof. Captain Johnston reports that " a break " was visible outside the outer rocks off the Cape marked on the chart, and Captain Babofc, who was on the lonic at the time of the accident, states his opinion that the broken water is in as nearly as possible the same spot. We are informed by the Secretary of the Racing Club that Master Agnes has not accepted for the Hurdle Race at next Saturday's meeting, and that the inclusion of his name in the list of acceptances was an error. Messrs. J. H. Bethune A- Co. held an important sale of town and country properties this afternoon. The attendance was large but the bidding was not remarkably brisk. The following lots were sold:— Ten acres of hind near the Railway Station, Palmerßton North, to Mr. Andrew Wylie, £500. The same buyer also purchased lot 33, 4, and 5, allotments of land in Featherston, at £30, £20, and £40 respectively. Messrs. Chapman and FitzGerald were the purchasers of four acres in Evans Bay for £100. Messrs. Fitaberbert and Devino became the buyers of an allotment with a frontage to Tasman-street for £170, whilst an adjoining allotment, with a 5-roomed dwelling, was knocked down to Mr. M. Siegrief for £250, and the same gentleman also became the pnrohaser of another allotment for £130. The book debts in the estate of the late Mr. *Peter Laing only realised £30. The Dumb Speak. — Mr. James B. Hatoher, a respeoted oitizen of Glair View, Inverell, N.S. Wales, Australia, gives the following foots, in a statement to the Daily Telegraph, of Sydney: — I am a poor man, with eight ohildren, and I wish to tell yon of my daughter, thirteen years of age. She retired one night, about four months ago, in her usual good health, but the next morning she could not speak. The dootor prescribed, and finally said he had no hope of her ever being able to speak again. Three months after she had been taken ill we used St. Jacobs Oil— the great pain-cure. I had used it myself for sciatica, with good results. Next morning we were delighted to find that, after the one application of the night before, she oonld talk as well as ever, and has been able to do so ever since. We beg to acquaint you with this marvellous enre.
