The Bogus Benefit Society Canvasser.
|Bt Tiusqeaph.J [united pblbB association.] j Cheibtchdbch, 9th July. Erneßt Rowland Davis, alias Beid, alias Oliver, was indioted for forgery and uttering. The aroused had formerly been connected in Dnnedin with the "National" Siok and Burial Association, and latterly had started a " National" Siok and Burial Society of his own in Christohuroh. When in Waimate last October, he had put a few pounds in the Post Office Savings Bank, and had withdrawn it except one shilling. He retained his Bank book, and came on to Chrißtchurch, where he showed the book to several persona, but instead of a balance of Is the figures had been altered and added to so as to appear there was .£3OO to his credit. The name, B. Capstick, clerk in the Post Office, Waimate, had been forged to one of the false entries. He was found Guilty of uttoring. Sentenoe was reserved, as there are other charges pending against him — one of administering laudanum to a woman, and two others for bre&chee of the Friendly Societies A<it.
