The State funeral of Victor Hugo took place to-day, when tho remains -were conveyed to their final resting place in the Pantheon. The procession was of a most imposing character, and was witnessed by an enormous crowd, who thronged the streets along the line of route. Several Communists, who were carrying red flags in contravention of the recent decree, were arrested at starting, but in other respects the proceedings were orderly. The steamer Stirling Castle, engaged by the British Government as a war cruiser, is now undergoing necessary alterations at Malta. When completed it is probable that she will be despatched to Australia.
