Auckland. 20th October. Dr. Philson, Miss Dobson, and other residents have received mysterious threatening letters demanding money. The case of Mrs. Macfarlano v. tho Trustees of Captain Read's estate has boeh adjourned to give tho petitioner time to answer. Seiious allegations are mado by the trustees against the management of the estate by the late Mr. J. S. Macfarlano. This Day. Mr. Riddler's house, near Hamilton, was burnt down yesterday. It was insaued, for .£IOO on the building, and .£IOO on the furniture, in tho Colonial office. Chrisichurcu, 20th October. Tho first century of the cricket season was mado to-day by Mr. C. Strange, a member of one of tho town clubs. He made 104 at Lincoln in a match against tho College. Thomas Colyers, in whose case the jury could not agree, had a fresh trial to-day, and was found Guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy. The judge sentenced him to 48 hours, his employers offering to take him on again. The Ashburton caso was withdrawn, an apology being accepted by tho prosecutor. To-morrow the Ashburton arson case wDI be taken, which is tho only one left. Dunedin, 20th October. Walter Edward Bishop, a bailiff, fell down dead this morning in the stroat. He used to be beadle in the Arcade. It is believed that he died of heart disease. The Law Society has telegraphed to the Government urging that a gentleman trained to the law should be appointed Resident Magistrate hero in Mr. Simpson's stead. This Day. The services of 21 men have been accepted here to join the Armed Constabulary. Others will join to-day. Nominations for tho Dunedin spring race me3ting close to-morrow night. Invercargill, 20th October. A petition, addressed to the Presbytery, is being circulated in this district, praying for an inquiry into certain recent utterances by Professor Falmond on the character of a church. The petitioners consider _ theso utterances to bo a violation of his ordination vows, and a proof that he is unfit longer for the theological chair he fills in connection with the Church of Otago and Southland. Timaru, 20th October. The total number of entries for the coining Agricultural Show is 830, being a large increase over previous years. Wanganui, 20th October. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show held to-day was very successful. The weather was beautiful, and a largo attendance present. The Jockey Club's Spring Meeting takes place to-morrow, and everything indicates an enjoyable day's sport.
