It now transpires that Mr. Thorp, the late_ teller of the Bank of Victoria, who was arrested yesterday, charged with embezzling .£2500, was recently suspended, and has since that time returned tho whole amount (J22500) in batches to his successor. He asserts that although he had used the money, he did not intend to steal it. The prisoner was brought up at tho Police Court to-day charged with embezzlement. Tho case was remanded for a week, bail being allowed. It has traiiapired that the prisoner had invested tho money in a building society. ¦ There is no change to report in the betting on the Melbourne Cup. The Czar's price is 25 to 1. This Day. The share-list whioh was open here for the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company of New Zealand was closed yesterday. Several applications for-aharcs had to be refused.
