ELECTION INTELLIGENCE.

? Dr. Newman addressed a large body of the electors at Sanson on Friday evening last ; Mr. Burcham presided. A vote of thanks to the speaker was carried at the conclusion of his address.

Mr. Shephard at present is the only candidate for Waimea. Dtjnedin, 19th October. Mr. J. M. Davis, a candidate for Dunedin East, addressed the electors to-night. He supported the present Government generally, opposed Bible-reading in schools, and was in favour of the present Education Act. He was a frao trader, and did not think any alteration in the licensing law was likely to become necessary during fho next Parliament. He thought the., present Act should get a fair trial, although he had an objestion to the elective Commissioners with magisterial functions. He received- a vote of confidence. Captain Scott received a vote of confidence after addressing a portion of the Roslyn constituency to-night. i Taukanga, This Day. Mr. G. V. Stewart addressed a crowded meeting in the Temperance Hall last night, Captain W. A. Clarke in the chair. Mr. Stewart declared himself an independent supporter of the Hall Government, remarking that he would support them as long as they acted rightly ; but if he considered they were not doing bo, he would not support them. He was opposed to the present Property Tax, and thought a half-penny in the £ sufficient. He supported an Income Tax, and promised to do Ins best to get land for working men. He also objected to the big runholdors. A hearty vote of confidence was carried by a large majority. A vote of thanks only was proposed, but was lost. CHBIBTOHURCH, THIS DAT. Mr. Dixon, one of the candidates for Ashley, addre ; scd the electors on Tuesday, and received a vote of thanks. Thames, This Day. Although Mr. Sheehan is announced for the Thames, it is thought probable he wil also, in response to a requisition, offer himself for Tauranga. MR. RUSSELL AT FOXTON. Foxton, This Day, A meeting was held here last night, when Mr. G. W. Russell addressed 2uO of the electors. Mr. Hnlke was in the chair. Mr. Russell spoke for an hour anvi a quarter on local finance, local government, taxation, and other qnestions. He considered the issue before the country was whether the local finance Bcheme of the Government should be accepted. He thoujhfc it a thoroughly good scheme, and would support the Government. Mr. Rockstrow, who retired in Mr. Russell's favour, proposed a vote of confidence, pledging the meeting to secure his return. This was seconded by Mr. London, and carried unanimously.
