Melbourne, 18th October. Sailed, this afternoon— Union Company's steamship Arawata, for Bluff The following is the latest betting for the Melbourne Cup : — Bathurst, Bto 1 ; Waxy, Bto 1 ; Duchess, 10 to 1 ; Trump Yoss, 15 to 1 ; Odd Trick, 20 to 1 ; Sir Modred, 20 to 1 ; Lord Burghley, 20 to 1. There is very little doing in the betting market. Mr. Thorp, teller of the Bank of Victoria, has been arrested on a charge of embezzling 2500 sovereigns, which he had replaced with copper coin. The case is not connected with the robbery of notes to the value of JG2500 from the same bank last month. This Day. A progress report of the Police Commission has been issued. It recommends the superannuation of Superintendents Nicholson and Hare, the reduction of Sadlier, and the disrating of Ward and Steele. The dismissal of the constables who were at Sherrett's hut at the time of the capture of the Eellys, and of Teacher and Wallace is also recommended. Superintendent Hare is severely condemned as a disturbing element ia the force. A minority of the Commissioners dissent from the recommendations of the report. The Italian warship, Europa, whioh went aground at Thursday Island, on the Queensland coast, but got safely off, has arrived at Batavia.
