LATEST INTELLIGENCE. THE CONDITION OF IRELAND. ESCAPE OF MR. O'CONNOR, M.P., TO ENGLAND. SERIOUS RIOT AT CORK. NEWS FROM AFGHANISTAN.
London, 17th October. It now transpires that the announcement made on the 14th inst., that Mr. Arthur O'Connor, M.P. for Queen'B County, was in custody, was premature. It now appears that, hearing that a warrant had been issued, he made hi 3 escape to England, and is still at large. Seriona rioting took place at Mallow, in County Cork, yesterday, between the troops and the people. The former fired upon and then charged the rioters, several of whom were severely injured before they were dispersed. A large meeting, under the auspices of the Land Leaguo, which was being held yesterday at Limerick, and waa attended by a great many people, was suppressed by order of the Government, a large force of polico being despatched to disperse the assemblage. Recent speeches and letters by English Democrats have denounced in strong terms ' the course now being pursued by the Government in Ireland. Calcutta, 17th October. Telegrams have been received from Afghanistan announc'ng that the Ameer's Turkestan army haß occupied Herat, which has been evacuated by Ayoub Khan. In accordance with the announcement made at the beginning of this month, the British garrison at Quettah, in Northern Beloochistan, near the Afghan frontier, has been largely reduced. Constantinople, 17th October. It has transpired that the Sultan has reca'led the mission which was recently despatched to the Khedive of Egypt.
