AN EXCITING SCENE.

[STDNIJY BVBWING HBWS, APKIL 30.J A very sensational incident occurred last Saturday evening at North Shore, by which tbe lives of four persons wore placed in ieopardy. It appeared that a Sydney lady with three children got into one of the pleasure carriages, which was to drive hir from the reserve to tbe steamers' wharf. Shortiy after leaving the reserve, the horses bolted, and the driver lost control over them. The animals got furious, and proceeded at a terrific rate down the hill for a mile and a half. The driver was thrown irom his seat to the ground, and the unrestrained animals rushed down the road at a pace that can better bo imagined than described. The lady frantically clung to her children, and screamed loudly for help. Dr. Ward, who was walking down the road, perceiving the dangerous career of the horses, jumped into a carriage that was close by, and caused tho drivor to follow the runaways* Dr. King, who was on horseback, also witnessed the occurrence, and followed in hot pursuit. As the affrighted animals proceeded down the road the residents rushed out of their houses and also ran after the runaways, so the vehicle was soon followed by a great number* and the excitement was great. The lady in the carriage acted most heroically, and with considerable presence of mind threw oiie of her children on to the roadside, where it sustained by the fall a few injuries, but none of them of a serious character. The other twi children she threw out at various diitances along the road. So exciting was the scene of the vehicle swaying two and tro and sweeping down tbe hill with its occupants that several of the spectators fainted. When the flat at Blues-point was reached there was intense excitement, for the runaways were headIng for the waters of the harbor. Fortunately there was a liuge lop near the waterside, and just as the horses approached the brink the wheel of tbe carriage crashed against the log, stopping them and turning them completely round. The vehicle was smashed, and the lady thrown out. Her injuries are fortunately not serious, but she now suffers somewhat severely from shock to her system. At the finish of the runaways' career there were nearly 200 persons present.
