From information which has been received here, it appears certain that the object of the Home Government in appointing Lord Augustus Loftu9 as Governor of New South Wales was the federation of the various Australian Colonies. The Governorship was offered in the first place to the Hon. Robert Bourke, M.P., Foreign Under-Secretary, but he found himself unable to accept the appointment.
