DUNEDIN. 17th March.

The halt-yearly examinations are now being held in Dunedin, as well as other parts of the colony. Seven candidates have presented themselves ia Dunedin. — three for barrister's examination, two for solicitor's, and two for examination iv general kaowledge. Lord Harris and the other English cricketers arrived in Dunedin to-day, and were waited on by the secretary of tho Otago Cricketing Association, with the view of arranging for an exhibition match in aid of the Kaitangata relief tund. Lord Harris explained that the arrangements of the Englishmen prevented them complying with the request. In the City Police Court to-day hts Worship gave judgment iv the case of the police v. Dodson, of the Empire. Accused had been proceeded against for allowing Calcutta sweeps to be drawn in his hotel. He was fined £5, and the magistrate said that he would impose a penalty of £20 in future In the case of the polica v. Drake and others, for holding a " consultation " sweep, his Worship held that the case was proved, and fined the defendants £10 and costs. Notice of appeal was given in each case. An athletic and racing association has been formed in Dunedin. The meeting to-night was attended by 70 or 8Q people, and it was re-ojved to, hold a m,onster gathering on Easter Monday. The Bible-reading in Schools Association tonight wrote to the Dunedin school committee, urging the desirability of the introduction of Bible reading in public schools, and asking an expression of opinion from the committee. Consideration of the matter was postponed. Miss Caroline Treme, of Otago University, has been awarded the Bowen prize offered by the New Zealand University.
