AUSTRALIAN. LARGE FAILURE IN SYDNEY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT ) Sydney, 4th September.
The failure is announced of Mr. Lloyd, a flour merchant. His liabilities are stated to be £131,000, of which it is said that £117,000 is secured. Prices for maize and potatoes are increasing.
[RBCTER'B SPECIAL TO PRBSB AGENCY.] Sydney, 3rd September. The second day's races of the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting took place on the Rand wick race-course to- day. The weather was wet, but there was a fair attendance. The following is the result of the day's running : — The Shorts, three-quarters of a mile : Judge, 1 ; Chieftain, 2. Jack and Sir Andrew ran a dead heat for third place. Mr. Ivory declared to win with Judge. Thirteen ran. Time, lmin. l-7sec. — Spring Maiden Stakes, distance one mile and a-half : Roodee, 1 ; Propriety, 2 ; Duke of Linne, 3. Only three ran. The race was won easily. Time, 2min. 45sec. — Squatters' Handicap, one mile: Soothsayer, 1; Fatima, 2; The Abbess, 3. Won by throe lengths. Time, lmin. 49 4-10 sec. Nine ran. During this race rain came on.— Great Metropolitan Stakes, two miles: Democrat, lj The Dean, 2 ; Colima, 3. Democrat started at 8 to 1, 2 to 1 Drum Major, 5 to 2 Auckland, 5 to 1 Woodlands and Strathern, 7 to 1 The Dean and Vulcan, 10 to 1 Woolstone. Ten ran. The winner was In the van almost throughout, but won gallantly at the finish by a neck in 3min. 38sec. Selling Plate, one mile and a quarter: Cardinal, 1; Kitty, 2; Roodee, 3. Won by two lengths. Tiine,2min. 14 l-Bsec. The winner was sold for £110. Five ran.
