THE REVOLT IN NEW CALEDONIA. SANGUINARY BATTLE. GENERAL RISING FEARED. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Sydney, 4th September.

The latest intelligence from New Caledonia brings word of a severe engagement having occurred at Lafor on the 29th ult., in which 30 natives were killf d and many wounded. The natives were defeated and retired, but on returning to carry away their dead, again were attacked, when 30 moie were killed and several wounded. Five soldiers were killed in the affray. The war still continues. Seven convicts made an attempt to escape, but three were shot and the rest recaptured. LVTER. It is positively stated that fully 100 were killed in the engagement which occurred at Lafor on the 29th ult. The Government deny tint they experienced any loss, but this statement is disbelieved. The friendly chiefs are known to be in secret communication with the hostile leaders, and it is feared that a general rising of the natives is imminent. Eleven hundred troops are now in the field, and reinforcements are being hurried to the front as rapidly as possible. The settlement is practically insolvent.
