At noon to-day the steamer Grafton, Captain "WF'iams, arrived from Sydney, with a cargo of coals. Sho is a fine iron vessel of 270 tons register, with twin-screws, dilven by two high pressure surface condensing engines of 65 horsepower nominal. The propellers are 7 feet in diameter, and running at 170 revolutions per minute give a speed of 9 knots an hour. She was originally bu ! lt as a paddlo boat by Baird. of IMrkenhead, and has recently been converted into a twin-screw, and otherwise altered, at a heav outlay. Her saloon passenger accommodation is -very superior. Below are enclosed stato rooms, bath, &c, and in a deck-house 40 feet long is the dining saloon. The cabins are beautifully fitted, and ventilation has been especially attendod to, as tho Grafton was originally intended for the Northern Queensland trade. The steerage accommodation is also of a better class than usual. For some time past tho vessel has been running in the Clarence Biver trade, and has been purchased by Captain Williams, who will probably lan her in the West Coast coal trade. She left Sydney at 5 o'clock last Wednesday morning, making the trip across in about a -week. Fine weather was experienced throughout. As we before stated, Mr. Anderson, who resigned the chief oflicership of the s.s. Taranaki, has been appointed captain of the Grafton.
