NEWCASTLE.
20th May, Lodged 9.50 a.m. . Finished 11.17 sum. A numerous meeting held at Alexandra on Saturday, for the purpose of forming a rifle corps* resolved to furnish the names of those willing to join to the Government. There is a strong feeling that better arms than those at present in use should be aupplied. Officers were elected.' Lodged 9 a,m. Finished 11,12 km. Three cabties passed here upwards this morning from W&ikato Heads, deeply laden with sharks, <fee, en route for Alexandra.
It k reported hy the settlei'S at Taupiri that a number of settlers are passing up the MaDgawhau Creek with strange natives. The general opinion here is that all canoes passing up the river should be searched, also all natives with swaga. The Waikato Times in its leading article advises the Government to& allow each tribe to supply a contingent to fight in company with European?, tlun land of any tribe refusing to supply *he requiied number, or acting treacherously, to be immediately confiscated', every man of the tribe to be treated as an enemy, and to be hunted down.
