MAGISTRATE'S COURT
SITTING AT LEESTON
A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Leeston to-day, Mr R. Ferner, S.M., presiding. E. W. Wade, who did not appear, Was charged with being found on licensed premises, the Southbridge Hotel, after closing hours, on May 8. Constable Smith gave evidence that about 7.20 p.m. on that day a car drew up outside the hotel and* a man went inside. Witness followed and heard the man, who was Wade, ,ask if he could obtain liquor.
The defendant was fined 20/- and ordered to pay 10/- costs.
When a case against P. J. Kelleher was called, Mr Nicholls' said that he had been instructed at the last moment by defendant's counsel to apply for an adjournment. He understood that the" police would not be going on with the case that day as they had stopped their witnesses from attending. As a matter of courtesy he had been asked to apply for the adjournment.
Constable Smith said that he objected to an adjournment. He understood that the other side wished for it, so 1 he had stopped his witnesses. He, however, was prepared to go on with the case.
The application was granted, the case being 1-adjourned until the next sitting. _
A sitting of the Children's Court was held at Leeston to-day when a boy was charged with two breaches of the motor traffic regulations. Both were dismissed.
