Musical Society.
FORMED AT LAST NIGHT'S MEETING
At the home of Mr and Mrs W. E. Doak, Irwell, last evening, Mr G. R. Stacpoole presided over a well-attended meeting of thoseinterested in musical activities in the district. In his opening remarks the chairman said that the meeting had been convened, at the suggestion of Mrs Doak, and the good response proved that others, too, felt the need for some musical organisation. From numerous inquiries it was evident that the purpose of the proposed society was Understood. It was to provide those interested in good music the opportunity to take part in programmes of solo and concerted items, vocal and instrumental. Interest in good music and a willingness to attend regularly were qualifications, rather than an advanced knowlede, of musical theory. It was decided to form a society, and the following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr G. R. Stacpoole; secretary, Mr N. B. Clarketreasurer, _ Miss Af E. Suckling^ district conveners, Mesdames A. J.Henderson (Leeston) and W. E Doak (Irwell); conductor, Mr N. B Clarke.
Meetings are to be held monthly at Leeston, on the fourth Monday. As the members were tooETAOI As the numbers were too great for the use of private houses, as originally intended, it was agreed to engage a hall.
The first meeting on June 25 is to take the form intended for subsequent gatherings, viz. half-hour programmes arranged by each of the district conveners, followed by three-quarters of an hour of choral work.
Further information about the activities of the society, which fe to be known as the Ellesmere Musical Society, may be obtained from of the office bearers. The evening concluded with a solo by Miss B. Withell, and vocal and pianoforte solos by Mrs Doak.
