After a long period of splendid service on- the Canterbury Education Board, as representative of the middle ward, which includes Ellesmere and adjacent districts, Mr W. A. Banks, recently retired because of advancing age and failing health. The school committees in the area are to elect a successor ,to Mr Banks, and Mr R. T. McMillan, of Irwell, has been nominated as a candidate. Mr McMillan has a fine record of service in public life, and among the positions he is filling at present are those of president of the Canterbury Progress League and chairman of the Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board. He is also a member and former chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board and of the Ellesmere County Council. Mr McMillan has always taken a keen interest in education and for fifteen years was a member of the Irwell School Committee and for some time its chairman. At present he is one of the Ir,well representatives on the committee of Leeston Consolidated School. Mr McMillan always gives very close attention to the interests of the bodies of which he is a member and he is particularly well qualified to fill the position vacated by Mr Banks. He is also well acquainted with all the districts which comprise the middle ward and it is hoped that he will be strongly supported by the school committees.
