WOMEN'S INSTITUTE There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Soutlibridge Women's Institute, over which Mrs Pilkington presided. The Roll Call "Most Interesting Subject on the Radio," was well responded to. Mrs J. I. Carr, delegate to the Federation • meeting at Darfield, read an account* of the business transacted and received a vote oi thanks. Mrs J. Dugan read the "Golden Thread" on the life of Edith Cavell and was thanked. The question of a location for the annual picnic was brought forward and, after discussion, it was agreed to hold the function at the local recreation ground, the picnic to be confined to Institute members. A sports committee was formed to arrange the programme. It was also decided to hold a social afternoon at the hall anteroom in December. Mrs Pilkington apologised for the absence of the voluntary organiser, Mrs W. Deans, who was to have addressed the meeting. A competition for the best u'niced fruit cake was judged by Mrs E. H. Rowell, of Springston and resulted as follows: Mrs W. G. Hill 1, Mrs A. J. Beamsley 2,, Mrs J. Ballagh 3. Other competitions judged by Mrs Johnson, were won as follows: Best large bloom: Mrs J. Ballagh 1, Misses E. Moorhead and D. Galpin, equal, 2, Mrs J. Moorhead 3. Small bloom: Mrs C. Tod 1, Miss E. Moorhead and Mrs Taylor, equal 2, Mrs J. Moorhead 3. Table runner: Mrs K. Hopa 1, Mrs C. Tod 2. Date and. fruit loaf: Mrs K. Hopa 1, Mrs C. Tod 2. After discussion it was decided not to enter a bay at Leeston Presbyterian Flower Show. Members were notified of the reduced fares for institutes travelling to! the Centennial Exhibition. Mrs Johnson, of Leeston, gave a most interesting address on a recent visit to Sydney, including a description of the harbour and city and related many humorous incidents met with during her stay. She was given a hearty vote of thanks for her very fine address which was much appreciated by the members. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames J. Moorhead; W. C. Eggelton, R. G. Bishop and Misses R. Stace, E. Moorhead and D. Galpin. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. Mr R. E. Flaws has returned to Wellington after spending several weeks with Mr and Mrs H. J. Greenwood, Southbridge. A challenge cards match to aid the funds of St. James's Church, between the ladies and gentlemen was won by the ladies by two games.
