Southbridge

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Women's Institute. Mrs Pilkington presided and welcomed Mrs Dick, president of Lakeside Institute, who judged the competitions. The roll call, "How to keep moths away," brought many useful hints. A letter was read from Mrs W. Deans, voluntary organiser, dealing with the emergency evacuation plans and stating that she would address Southbridge members at the November meeting. Sister Dawes, a missionary on furlough, gave an interesting address on her travels in China; relating, incidents in the daily lives of the Chinese. At the conclusion of her address she was thanked by Mrs T. H. Bennett. During a social interval Mrs W. C. Eggelton contributed a solo and Mrs T. H. Bennet gave a recitation. Mesdames R. F. Pilkington, T. H. Bennett and Misses T. Lilley and R. Stace volunteered to assist at Ellesmere Show with the sale of work made by Blind Institute members. , A trophy for art needlework was won by Miss T. Lilley, who gained Ist and 2nd and Miss E. Moorhead 3. Another trophy, donated by J. Ballantyne and Co., for the best decorated bowl of spring flowers was won by Miss E. Moorhead 1, Mrs J. Ballagh 2, and Mrs Couch 3. Other competitions judged by ,Mrs Dick and Sister Dawes were won as follows: —Best large bloom, Mrs Couch 1, Mrs Lilley 2, Miss Stace 3. Small bloom, Mrs M. Inwood 1, Miss Moorhead and Mrs Taylor (equal) 2, Mrs J. Ballagh and Miss F. Greenwood (equal) 3. Billy sponge, Mrs K. Hopa 1, Mrs C. Tod 2. Lavender satchet. Mrs J. Mcllraith 1, Mrs K. Hopa 2. A clock competition was won by Master Barrie Inwood. Mrs Dick commented very favourably on the excellent quality of the needlework done for the trophy and on the very fine display of spring blooms exhibited in the decorated bowl competition. A large number of parcels were handed in by members to be sent to the Makogai lepers for Christmas. A sales table managed by Mesdamea J. I- Carr and J. Ballagh brought in a good result. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames G. Couch, J. Fletcher, K. Hopa, T. K. Taylor and J. Mcllraith. The hostesses for November will be Mesdames J. Moorhead, W. C. Eggelton, T. H. Bennett, Misses R. Stace and H. Bishop.
