SOUTHBRIDGE

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

PREPARING FOR SHOW

Mr H. J. Greenwood, president, was in the chair at a committee meeting of the Southbridge Horticultural Society, held last evening. Others present were: Mesdames A. McCartin, J. Ballagh, H. J. Greenwood, A. J. Inwood, R. G. Bishop, W. J. Kemp, Misses Lewis and Lewton, Messrs A. J. Inwood (secretary), A. Tong, H. Schnelle, W. C. Eggelton, H. G. Hubbard, W. J. Bishop, K. Wylie, R. J. Parkin, T. H. Bennett, A. McPherson and McMillan. Several apologies for absence were received. Upon the motion of Mr A. McPherson, the meeting extended its sympathy to Mr W. Mcllraith, of Lakeside, in his serious illness, and the hope that he would soon be well again. Mr Mcllraith had taken a keen interest in the society for a number of years. Mrs Scott, secretary of the Presbyterian Flower Show Committee, wrote thanking the society for the loan of its staging equipment and enclosing a donation to the funds.

It was decided to invite the. member for the district to open the show. Judges were appointed. The same arrangements as last year for the supply of afternoon tea were agreed to, and the matter of arranging for morning tea for judges and officials was left in the secretary's hands.

The president, Mrs J. Williamson, Miss Lewton, Messrs A. McPherson, R. J. Parkin and the secretary were appointed a special prize allocation committee.

It was agreed that a sheep live weight judging competition should be held at the show.

A handsome rose bowl given to the society by the late Mr J. Connolly, M.P., was shown for the first time at the meeting and was greatly admired.

The president said that it had been decided some time ago to award the trophy to the winner of most points in the vegetable section. A further condition was that it should be won three times before becoming the property of any exhibitor. There was a feeling among some of the members that the rose bowl should be held by the society permanently as a memorial to the donor.

Mrs Ballagh thought that the decision already in the minutes should be allowed to stand. Any person who could win the trophy three times well deserved to become the permanent owner.

Mr Inwood was of the same opinion and it was agreed that the minute should stand.

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

There was a very fair attendance at the Town Hall anteroom when Miss B. Sanders, of the Women's National Council, Christchurch, addressed a meeting of women. Mrs G. B. Couch occupied the chair and introduced Miss Sanders, who gave an interesting address on the aims of the National Council of Women and also on the work of the National Government.

Miss Sanders was accompanied by Mr H. Holland, M.P., and Mrs Holland. Mr Holland, who has had a long association with the present Government, also gave a brief address. On the motion of Mrs T. H. Bennett, seconded by Mrs J. Ballagh, hearty votes of thanks were accorded to Miss Sanders and Mr Holland for their addresses.

The question of forming a branch of the Women's National Council at Southbridge was discussed and left for consideration. In the meantime, Mrs R. G. Bishop, who was proposed by the meeting, consented to act as correspondent.

EUCHRE TOURNAMENT.

At the euchre tournament held in aid of the school sports fund there was a good attendance. The most successful players were Mrs Cooper and Miss Lewton, Messrs Home and C. Bunting. Supper was served by the ladies.

PERSONAL

Mr and Mrs G. S. Simpson, of Wanganui, who have been visiting relatives in the district, left for Wellington at the week-end.

Mr and Mrs Somerville, of Otago, are spending a holiday with Mrs Somerville's parents, Mr and Mrs J. A. Carr, Southbridge. Mrs G. B. Couch, president of the Southbridge Women's Institute, attended a meeting of the executive committee of the North Canterbury Federation. A letter of thanks was read from the secretary of St. Saviour's Orphanage, thanking the federation for help at St. Saviour's fair.
